Which Ring Setting Is Right for You?
A Setting Style Guide

Each setting style has trade-offs. Some maximize sparkle but need more maintenance. Others prioritize protection but show less of the stone. Understanding these differences helps you choose a setting that matches how you’ll actually wear your ring—not just how it looks in photos.

Choosing the Right Setting for Your Ring

At Waxhaw Jewelers, we design custom engagement rings from scratch. That means we talk through setting options during every consultation. The right setting isn’t the one that looks best in a photo. It’s the one that matches how you’ll actually wear your ring.

If you work with your hands, a bezel or channel setting protects your diamond better than prongs. If you want maximum sparkle and don’t mind occasional maintenance, prong or pavé settings show more of the stone. If you want a smooth profile that won’t catch on clothing, channel settings sit flush with the band.

Each setting style affects brilliance, durability, and maintenance. Here’s how to choose the one that works for your lifestyle and your diamond.

Prong Settings

Prong settings use small metal claws to hold the diamond in place. Two or more prongs wrap around the crown of the stone to secure it. This style uses minimal metal, which allows maximum light to pass through the diamond.

Four-prong settings are commonly used for princess cuts and other shapes with delicate corners. Six-prong settings offer additional security for larger stones and create a more traditional appearance.

Shared Prong Settings

Shared prong settings are a variation of the classic prong style. Adjacent stones share prongs between them, which reduces the amount of visible metal and allows stones to sit closely together. The result is a continuous row of diamonds with increased sparkle and minimal interruption from metal.

Channel Settings

In a channel setting, diamonds or gemstones are set between two vertical metal walls, creating a smooth, secure channel. The stones sit flush with the metal, with no prongs separating them. This style offers a clean, contemporary look while protecting the edges of the stones from everyday wear.

Bar Channel Settings

Bar channel settings are a more structured variation of the traditional channel setting. Each stone is separated by a vertical bar of metal, offering added definition and security. This style combines the durability of channel settings with a slightly more architectural appearance.

Pavé Settings

In pavé settings, small diamonds are set close together using tiny metal beads, creating the appearance of a surface covered in sparkle. The stones are set low, allowing light to reflect across the entire ring. This setting adds visual impact and brilliance without overwhelming the center stone.

Bezel Settings

Bezel settings feature a metal rim that surrounds the diamond or gemstone at the girdle, securing it fully in place. This setting offers excellent protection and a clean, streamlined profile. Bezel designs can also create the illusion of a larger stone, depending on the metal thickness and design.
